I Thought We Were Older Than This

Today I found out that I haven’t gotten away from my least favorite part of teaching just because my students are not six. It happened out of nowhere, just like all major disasters. One minute I was talking to the special education teacher and the next I was gripping the back counter trying to breathe normally. This was one thing I thought I had left behind in kindergarten but here this student stands asking to go to the nurse holding out a bloody bone…

Loose and lost teeth freak me out. I don’t understand why people don’t panic when a bone falls out of their jaw, covered in their own blood. The student calmly asked to go to the nurse and I simply stared at the ceiling and wrote him a pass. The special education teacher looked at me and I just said, “well, I am fainter…”
