A Trading Idea

I have an idea and I need some suggestions/ advice/ review from unbiased parties.

Two weeks from now is Thanksgiving. Next week and into Thanksgiving week, I am going to have my students study settlers moving into Indiana and trading with Native Americans. Each week my students work to earn a fun project on Friday based on their behavior. I think I am going to move the prize to the Tuesday before Thanksgiving so they do not have half a week to earn no prize. They almost always get the prize.

Now here is my idea for the prize…

I am going to have students trade snacks. Each snack (pretzels, candy corn, jelly beans…) will represent things settlers and Natives traded (bread, corn, beans…). Each student will be a member of an Native tribe or a European county. They will have a baggie of one type of snack and go around trading their snacks with others to try and get all of the snacks on their list.

I hope to show the students that it was not easy to get all of things people needed and why the French and Indian War happened. I think they will mostly enjoy it and then they will have snacks to take home for Thanksgiving break.

The week before we will study Native Americans and settlers. I think I may assign them to their tribe/ country early in the week so that as we study they have some investment in their learning. I may also give them some non-fiction articles describing who they would have been as a settler or Native American. We will do some timelines and sequencing with the first Thanksgiving and the French and Indian War. We will read and work on some Thanksgiving themed division.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Anyone?
